A GIF background remover replaces a selected background color with transparent pixels in every animation frame. VisualFormat uses color matching with adjustable tolerance, so it works best on solid or near-solid backgrounds. It preserves the GIF’s dimensions, frame order, encoded timing, and loop setting.
Limits: up to 20 MB, 500 frames, 4,096 pixels per side and 40 million total full-frame pixels. Encoded GIF output is limited to 80 MB. Large or long animations may need smaller dimensions, especially on phones.
Example: the sample is a 480 × 320 animation with a white background. With White and Edges only selected, the outer white area becomes transparent while the enclosed white detail stays visible. The exported animation keeps all 24 frames at their original size and timing.

Tap the background or choose a color. Adjust tolerance and inspect several frames on light and dark backgrounds.
Select Remove background to process every frame. Compare the animated result, then download your transparent GIF.
Edges only starts at the frame border and follows connected matching pixels. A white detail enclosed inside a colored shape can stay white while the surrounding white background disappears. Use Every matching pixel when you also want to remove enclosed gaps.
This is a color-based tool, not automatic subject recognition. Complex scenes and soft hair edges need a different editing approach. GIF transparency is all-or-nothing; a pale outline may remain where the subject blends into its original background.

Choose a GIF with a solid or near-solid background. VisualFormat suggests a color from the first frame’s edges. Tap the original preview or enter a color, adjust tolerance, and check several frames. Select Remove background, then download the transparent animated GIF.
Yes. Choose the White, Black, or Green preset, enter a six-digit hex color, or tap the original frame to pick its actual color. Increase tolerance gradually if the background has similar shades. The same color and tolerance are applied to every frame.
Edges only removes matching pixels connected to the frame border through matching or already transparent pixels. It protects enclosed areas of the same color inside your subject. Every matching pixel also removes enclosed matches, which can clear background gaps but can erase subject details.
This tool removes colors; it does not recognize people or objects. It works best for logos, stickers, pixel art, and flat backgrounds. Busy scenes, hair, shadows, and subjects that share the background color may need a manual editor or a subject-segmentation tool.
Yes. Every frame is reconstructed before processing. The output retains the original dimensions, frame order, encoded delays, and loop setting. Frames are cleared between displays to prevent motion trails. Very short delays may play differently across browsers.
Edge pixels can contain a mixture of the subject and its old background. A slightly higher tolerance can remove some of these pixels, but may also erase detail. GIF supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, not soft transparency. Check the preview on both light and dark backgrounds before exporting.
It is free, with no account, watermark, AI model, or paid processing API. Decoding, color removal, and encoding run on your device in a Web Worker. Your files and filenames are not uploaded. Optional website analytics follow your consent choice.
The tool uses standard JavaScript, Canvas, and Web Workers, without requiring the EyeDropper API or WebGPU. Use an up-to-date Safari, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox with JavaScript enabled. On a phone, tap the original frame to pick a color. If a download opens a preview, use your browser’s Save or Share option. Large GIFs may exceed the memory available on some devices.
Inputs are limited to 20 MB, 500 frames, 4,096 pixels per dimension, and 40 million total full-frame pixels. GIF output is capped at 80 MB. Background removal does not guarantee a smaller file: rebuilding transparent frames can increase its size. Some frames may need color reduction to reserve a transparent palette entry.
