What does a GIF frame extractor do?

A GIF frame extractor splits an animated GIF into individual still images. VisualFormat reconstructs every complete frame and exports a PNG sequence at the original dimensions, with transparent areas preserved. You can download one frame or all frames together.

How to extract frames from a GIF

01

Choose your GIF

Upload a GIF from your device or try our example. Check the dimensions, frame count, and total duration.

02

Extract and explore

Select Extract frames. Browse thumbnails, jump to a frame number, or use the slider to find the moment you need.

03

Save PNGs or a ZIP

Download one full-size PNG or all frames in a ZIP. The included timing file records the original sequence and frame durations.

Complete frames. Original detail.

Some GIF files store only the pixels that changed between frames. This tool rebuilds each displayed frame before exporting, including transparent areas and how earlier frames are cleared or restored.

A still image for every moment.

PNGs do not play as an animation. Frame order, timestamps, durations, and loop settings are included in frames.json inside the ZIP. The PNG sequence can be larger than the original GIF.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

GIF Frame Extractor FAQs

Formats, frame timing, transparency, and privacy.

How do I extract frames from a GIF?

Choose a GIF, then select Extract frames. Browse the numbered thumbnails or use the frame selector. Download the selected frame as a PNG, or choose Download all (ZIP) to save the entire sequence.

Can I convert a GIF to a PNG sequence?

Yes. Each frame becomes a separate full-size PNG named frame-0001.png, frame-0002.png, and so on. The ZIP contains the PNG sequence in its original order and a frames.json file with frame durations and timestamps.

Are the extracted frames complete images?

Yes. The extractor reconstructs each displayed frame, including changes inherited from earlier frames and GIF disposal instructions. You get complete images, not just the small updated rectangles stored in some GIFs.

Does the GIF frame extractor preserve transparency and quality?

Transparent areas remain transparent in the PNGs. Frames keep the original GIF canvas dimensions and decoded pixel colors without resizing or reducing the color palette. This does not restore details that were absent from the original GIF.

Can I save just one frame from a GIF?

Yes. Extract the GIF, choose a frame using its thumbnail, the slider, or its frame number, then use Download frame. You do not have to download the ZIP.

Are PNG frames animated? Where is the frame timing?

Each PNG is a still image. The page shows each frame’s encoded duration and its start time in milliseconds. The ZIP also includes this timing, the total duration and the original loop setting in frames.json. Very short delays may play differently in GIF viewers.

Is this tool free, and does it use AI?

It is free, without accounts, watermarks, credits, or AI processing. GIF decoding, PNG encoding, and ZIP packaging all run locally in your browser. Your file and filename are not uploaded.

What are the file limits?

The tool accepts GIFs up to 20 MB and 500 frames, with a maximum width or height of 4,096 pixels and 40 million total full-frame pixels. Extracted PNGs are limited to 64 MB combined. These are VisualFormat’s working-memory limits; a long or complex GIF may need to be made smaller first.
